DLINK AirPlus G DI-524 802.11g/2.4GHZ Wireless Router
Instructions for Securing your router :
- Open the web browser
- Type in the IP Address of the Router (the default is-http://192.168.0.1) and press Enter
- A login window will appear.
- Type admin in the user name field (this is the default user name, if you have changed it then you'll need to specify the
username you created)
- Click Ok or enter the password you created and then, click OK.
Change the Router Login/Password:
- Click on "Tools" on the top and select "Admin" from the left side.
- Change the Admin password. This password should be unique and complex yet easy to remember. Phrases are also
good, rather than just one simple word. Example: Ac00Lpa55word
- Also change the User password following the same guidelines you used for the Admin password.
- It is also a good idea to change your passwords occasionally as well.
Change and Secure the SSID
- Click on the "Wireless" button on the left side
- In the SSID box, specify a name for your network. This should be a unique name that is not too obvious, for example the serial number of your wireless router..
- Channel can be left at default or you can specify whichever channel you want. It is important to remember that neighboring wireless routers may create interference if they use the same channel. As a result you may want to select an alternate channel number.
- Set the Mode Setting to Mix Mode.
- Set SSID Broadcast to DISABLED
Encryption (WPA)
- Security should be set to WPA or WPA2. (If the computers on your network do not support WPA or WPA2 then WEP should be used instead.)
- Choose PSK (Private Shared Key)
- Specify a Passphrase and a Confirm Passphrase. Again, this phrase should not be obvious. Make it complicated with spaces
and punctuation if possible. (Use a different passphrase than the one you chose for the Admin Account)
- Choose Apply
- The changes saved page should display.
You now need to make your wireless network secure on each of the PC's that will be part of the network.

- Click Next
- Enter the Network Key (Passphrase)

- Click on Change Advanced Settings
- Click on Wireless Networks Tab
- A list of Preferred Networks is displayed. Click on your SSID and use the move up button to move your SSID to the top of the list.
If you are using a non Windows XP system, you will need to refer to your Wireless Network Card Manufacturer's documentation for information on how to secure the wireless network.
Now go back into the router configuration window and register the MAC addresses that will be allowed on your network.
Register MAC addresses of Network PC's on Router
- Obtain the MAC addresses of each PC that will be on your network. This can be
done by doing the following on each of the PC's that will be on your network:
- Click Start and choose Run
- Type cmd and click OK
- Type ipconfig /all
- Locate “Physical Address” (It should look something like 00-01-CA-XX-
21-10)
- This is the MAC address. Repeat this on each computer that is connected
to your network and take note of the numbers.
- In the Dlink configuration screen, choose the “Advanced” tab from the top
and choose “Filters” on the left side.
- Choose “MAC Filters” at the top and select “Only allow computers with
MAC address listed below to access the network.”
- Enter the name of the computer you are adding to the list. “Mike's computer” for
example.
- Enter the MAC Address of the computer that you are adding to the network
into the MAC Address box. Click “Apply” and verify that the computer name and MAC address are displaying in the list at the page bottom.
- Repeat this for each PC that will be on your network. Only PC's/MAC
Addresses that you add to this list will be allowed to use your network.
Once you have completed all of the above steps, you have made the wireless access point secure.
