Instructions for Securing your router
- Open the web browser
- Type in the IP Address of the Router (the default is-http://192.168.1.245) and press ENTER
- A login window will appear.
- Leave the user name field blank (this is the default user name, if you have changed it then you’ll need to specify the
username you created)
- Enter admin in the password field (this is the default password. If you have changed it then you’ll need
to enter the password you created) and click OK.
Change Wireless Access Point Password
- Verify the “Setup” tab is chosen and select “Password”.
- Enter a new password and confirm the password in the AP password fields. Note: This password should be complicated yet easy to
remember.
- Change this password periodically to improve your network security.
Change and Secure the SSID
- Select the “Setup” tab at the top. Verify that the “Basic Setup” page is currently displaying.
- In the “AP Name” box, specify a name for your Wireless Access Point. This should be a unique name, and try not
to make it too obvious.
- The LAN section can be left as is.
- In the “Wireless” section, “Mode” should be set to “Mixed”.
- In the SSID box enter a name for your network. Again this name should be memorable to you, but not so easy that someone
could guess it. For example, the serial number of your Wireless Access Point.
- Set “SSID Broadcast” to “DISABLE.”
- “Channel” can be left at default or you can specify whichever channel you want. It is important to remember that
all neighboring wireless networks may create interference if they use the same channel number. As a result you may want to select an alternate channel number.
Encryption (WPA)
- Select “Enable” next to Wireless Security
- Click “Edit Security Settings”
- In the “Security Mode drop down box, choose “WPA Pre-Shared Key” (NOTE: In all cases WPA2 provides the best security. Choose it whenever possible. If your network card
does not however support WPA or WPA2, WEP can be chosen instead)
- Leave WPA Algorithm at its default setting.
- Enter a WPA Shared key of 8-32 characters. This key should be treated as a password and should not be simple. This key should
only be shared with the people who you have authorized to use your network. This should be a different password than the one specified for the Access point.
- Leave “Group Key Renewal” as default.
- Choose “Save Settings”
You now need to make your wireless network secure on each of the PC’s that will be
