Using "Colorado State University" or the university zip code "80523" in the address will delay arrival since residence hall mail is delivered directly from the Fort Collins Post Office to the residence halls.

Because a photo ID is required to identify package recipients, packages addressed to someone who does not live in the room (such as parents) will be returned to sender. Ordering items under an alias or fictitious name is considered mail fraud.

Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating Rooms

Posters, pictures, plants, and rugs are a few of the typical items used to decorate residence hall rooms. Students will be charged for damage to the walls and floors that incur from decorating. Waterbeds and water-filled furniture of any kind are not allowed. Students are not permitted to paint their own rooms.

General Questions

Q: Are freshmen students guaranteed on-campus housing?
A: Yes. At Colorado State University, freshmen are guaranteed a space to live on campus in the residence halls. All newly admitted first-year students without previous college experience who are single, under 21 years of age, and who do not live with their parents in the Fort Collins area are required by University regulation to live and eat in the residence halls for the first two consecutive semesters of their enrollment.

Q: What type of bed linens are needed for the beds?
A: All beds are 39 inches x 80 inches and require extra long twin sheets.

Q: What appliances are allowed in the residence halls?
A: Small electrical appliances that are UL approved and do not have open electric coils are allowed. Small microwaves and refrigerators are fine. Halogen lamps are not allowed.

Q: What is the alcohol policy?
A: Alcohol, smoking, and drugs are not allowed in any of the residence halls.

Q: What is the marijuana policy on campus and how does Amendment 64 impact the halls?

Q: Whom should my student contact if something in their room is not working properly?
A: Students can place work orders by phone at 491-7171 or online.

Q: Do I need to bring a telephone?
A: Telephone service is not provided in residence hall rooms. A subscription for telephone service can be purchased by contacting Housing Operations Management at (970) 491-7171, or by placing a work order at HDS Customer Service. If you purchase telephone service you must bring your own phone, answering machine, etc. At this time Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is not available in the residence halls.

Q: Do all residence hall rooms have an Internet connection?
A: Yes. Visit the Technology Services page to learn more.

Q: Are there laundry facilities available?
A: There are laundry facilities in every residence hall.

Room Change Requests

Q: What if I don’t get along with my roommate or suitemate?
A: Talk with your roommates/suitemates about your concerns. If this does not help, bring your concerns to the Resident Assistant (RA) on the floor.

Q: What if I want a room or hall change?
A: Talk with the Office Manager at the front desk of your residence hall. This staff member will alert the Residence Director who will discuss a move with you.

Q. What if I looked at my roommate's Facebook profile and want to change roommates?
A: We know that your first instinct is to check out your new roommate on Facebook or another social media site. We remind students (and parents/family members) that it has been our experience that students do not get a complete and accurate sense of who their roommate is based on their Facebook profile. Viewing status updates, photos, and affiliations on social media sites may not accurately reflect whether or not you will be compatible roommates.  We recommend that you contact your new roommate directly, get to know each other, and give yourselves time to see how you will relate as roommates.

Request for Exemption from University Living Regulation

Lagoon with TowersCSU requires that all newly admitted first-year students without previous college experience, who are single, under 21 years of age, and not living with their parents in the Fort Collins area, live in the University residence halls for the first two consecutive terms of their attendance.  Credits taken concurrent with high school and/or credits attained through Advanced Placement (AP) do not apply towards living experience.

First-year students wishing to reside off-campus in the Fort Collins area with their parents or for reasons other than those listed above may request a special exemption by filling out the Request for Exemption Form (PDF).

Housing During University Breaks

For the 2013-2014 academic year, select residence halls will be open for fall and spring break. Specifically; Braiden Hall, Durward Hall, Edwards Hall, Newsom Hall, Parmelee Hall, and Westfall Hall remain open. During the winter break only Parmelee Hall will remain open.

A daily rate of $55 will be assessed for each night students stay in the hall - the rate includes overnight accommodation as well as two meals per day. Meals will be provided via the Parmelee Dining Hall. Students may elect to stay for the entire break or for a portion of break. Advanced registration is required via the MyHousing.ColoState.edu portal and will be open a few weeks prior to each break. Dates for each break period can be found via the "Important Dates" section of the Residence Life website. Students living in a hall that is open for the break will stay in their current rooms. Students from other halls who request break housing may apply for limited available overflow spaces. For additional information, please contact Residence Life at (970) 491-4719.

Students must otherwise make arrangements for off-campus housing during the break periods.

  • Fall Break November 23 - December 1, 2013 - selected halls remain open but dining centers close (except Parmelee) after lunch Friday
  • Winter Break December 20 - Residence halls close at 10 p.m., except Parmelee Hall and Dining Center which remains open for students who register in advance
  • Spring Break March 15 - 23, 2014 - selected halls remain open but dining centers close (except Parmelee ) after lunch Friday
