Eco Leaders

ecoleaders

Eco Leaders are students in the residence halls who help raise awareness about sustainability issues and encourage environmentally-responsible behaviors for an academic year. Eco Leaders educate students in their hall about sustainability issues such as waste reduction and energy conservation, and help plan activities and campaigns.

Eco Leaders Mission

Housing & Dining Service's Eco Leaders Program at Colorado State University trains students to model and promote community-building, eco-literacy, social justice, and sustainable behaviors in the residence halls and other Housing & Dining facilities by educating their peers using community-based social marketing techniques.

Program Commitment

Eco Leaders commit to an average of 3-5 hours per week, including 1-hour mandatory meetings on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. (both fall and spring semester).  In return, they receive an $800 housing reimbursement per semester ($1,600 for the academic year).

Eco Leaders must also commit to moving into the halls on Monday, August 19 and be available through Thursday, August 22 for training.

Job Description

The Eco Leader position requires the candidate to be both creative and consistent in their work. Eco Leaders are responsible for working on multiple student engagement campaigns and events at the same time, for example RecycleMania, the Waste Audit, or the Earth Day Celebration. Eco Leaders must be able to work independently on projects and yet recognize when aid from the director of the program is needed.

Eco Leaders learn the skill sets necessary for their professional careers. They gain knowledge on all topics related to sustainability including social justice, the environment, and the economy. This is accomplished through educational articles, debates, weekly discussions, experential learning, and guest speakers in the sustainability field. Eco Leaders also sharpen their communication skills and strengthen their ability to work in a team setting.  Eco Leaders help guide the sustainability mission, champion environmental programs, and engage the student body on a daily basis within the residence halls.
